Battle of the Bands Raises Awareness of Teen Suicide - Birmingham, AL
High School Bands Compete to Raise Awareness of Teen Suicide
Teen Link’s Inaugural Battle of the Bands is an event aimed at raising awareness about the prevalence of Teen Suicide through a cutting edge competition between Birmingham's Best High School Bands. The event will be held at Workplay Theater on Sunday August 3rd beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The competition will feature six of Birmingham’s most talented high school “garage” bands competing for the prestige of being named the Number One High School Band in Central Alabama.
The events main purpose is to draw attention to the epidemic of suicide among today’s youth. Teen Link hopes that all in attendance will leave more informed about the prevalence of suicide and more educated as to the warning signs and best methods of intervention.
The Suicide is the third leading cause of death for young adults aged 15-24 and the second leading cause of death for college students. Experts believe suicide to be one of the most preventable forms of death as the majority of those contemplating suicide leave clear warning signs that may serve as an opportunity for intervention.
According to the recently released 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey, 1 out of 7 high school students has seriously considered attempting suicide within the last 12 months, and 1 out of 10 students had gone as far as to make a detailed plan as to how they would carry out suicidal ideations.
Teen Link is the adolescent arm of the Crisis Center offering all Central Alabama teens confidential and anonymous counseling at no cost via telephone or online chat. All calls and chats are answered by trained volunteers who help teens navigate their way through issues as simple as dating concerns and parental frustration, and as complex as pregnancy, sexual abuse and suicide. The Crisis Center is a United Way Organization and has been providing crisis intervention, sexual assault, and mental health services to the Greater Birmingham Area since 1970.
